Are You Programming Your Brain to See Problems or Solutions? 🎯🧠

brain programming
“The eyes see only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.” – Robertson Davies

It happens to all of us. The moment you start thinking about buying a red Toyota, they suddenly appear at every stoplight. Or perhaps you discover you are pregnant, and mysteriously, pregnant women seem to be everywhere you look. Your friend gets engaged, and now you notice every couple holding hands. Your teenager starts driving, and suddenly the roads seem more dangerous than ever before.

Are the universe and social media algorithms conspiring to show you these things? Not quite – though the truth is even more fascinating.

DISCOVERING YOUR BRAIN’S HIDDEN SUPERPOWER: THE SCIENCE OF SELECTIVE ATTENTION

What pregnant women, red cars, and engagement rings have in common is you – specifically, your brain’s remarkable filtering system called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Think of it as your brain’s bouncer, deciding which of the millions of pieces of information surrounding you right now gets past the velvet rope into your conscious awareness.

Understanding your RAS is like discovering you have had a personal assistant your entire life – one who has been deciding what to show you based on instructions you did not even know you were giving.

UNVEILING THE MECHANICS: WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

Here is where things get fascinating: Your conscious mind can only process about 40 bits of information per second – equivalent to a short sentence. Meanwhile, your subconscious mind is processing an astounding 40 million bits of information per second! This means while you are consciously reading these words, your subconscious mind is simultaneously:

  • Monitoring your breathing rate
  • Adjusting your posture
  • Processing every sound in your environment
  • Registering subtle changes in light and temperature
  • Picking up on others’ facial expressions and body language
  • Noticing environmental patterns and potential threats
  • Managing thousands of bodily functions
  • Storing and processing emotional responses
  • Recording every detail of your surroundings

Those pregnant women, red cars, and engagement rings were always being processed by your subconscious mind – but your RAS was previously filtering them out of your conscious awareness as “not important right now.” The moment something becomes relevant to your life, your RAS updates its filtering system and suddenly allows this previously filtered information to cross the threshold into your conscious awareness.

Your RAS operates like a diligent security system – constantly scanning for what you’ve programmed it to flag as important, whether those priorities serve you or not.

Think of your RAS as the gatekeeper between your vast subconscious processing power and your limited conscious awareness. By consciously programming your RAS, you are essentially giving new instructions to your subconscious about what information is important enough to bring to your attention.

BLIND SPOTS AND BARRIERS

WHEN YOUR RAS WORKS AGAINST YOU

This reveals a vital truth: Your RAS does not just filter for red cars and pregnant women. It also filters for evidence that supports your deeply held beliefs:

IF YOU BELIEVE: “Good relationships are hard to find,”

  • Your RAS dutifully highlights every failed relationship around you

IF YOU THINK: “I can’t do that!”

  • your RAS collects evidence of every small mistake or perceived failure

IF YOU BELIEVE: “Money is scarce,”

  • your RAS emphasizes every expense while filtering out opportunities for abundance

CONSCIOUS REWIRING: YOUR PATH TO TRANSFORMATION

Just as your RAS can be accidentally programmed to notice red cars, it can be intentionally programmed to notice opportunities, evidence of your success, and proof of your capabilities. Here is how:

MORNING PROGRAMMING RITUAL

HOW TO RETRAIN YOUR RAS

  • Begin each day by clearly stating what you want to notice (abundance, opportunity, right place at right time, kindness, etc)
  • Create a “success scavenger hunt”: list specific evidence you want your RAS to find
  • Place visual reminders such as affirmations, in your environment that prompt your RAS to seek positive patterns
  • Practice “reality checking” when negative patterns emerge and your calling witness to things you don’t want to increase in your awareness, or experience, ask yourself, “What else is true?””What else do I see?”and then tell your brain to pay attention to something you see that is positive (a flower, smile, color, sound, smell, structure, animal, person, etc)

A DAILY AWARENESS PRACTICE

TRANSFORMING YOUR ATTENTION PATTERNS

1. Notice when your current RAS programming is revealing itself:

  • “There I go focusing on all the messy areas of my house again, while missing the organized spaces”
  • “I notice I am only seeing people who seem more successful than me”
  • “I keep spotting evidence that ‘nothing works out for me'”
  • “I am automatically focusing on my child’s challenging behaviors while missing their growth”

2. Consciously choose new filters:

  • “Instead of noticing every time I am running late, I will track when I am perfectly on time”
  • “Rather than focusing on what is missing in my relationship, I choose to notice moments of connection”
  • “Instead of seeing all my incomplete projects, I will notice my daily progress”
  • “Rather than spotting every parenting mistake, I choose to notice my moments of patience”

3. Keep an “evidence journal” of experiences that support your desired beliefs:

Daily entries might include:

  • “I received positive feedback at work today – evidence that I am competent”
  • “My child hugged me after our disagreement – proof that our connection is strong”
  • “I handled that difficult conversation well – showing my emotional intelligence”
  • “I saved money on groceries today – evidence that I am becoming financially savvy”

4. Challenge your RAS by actively seeking evidence that contradicts limiting beliefs:

IF YOU BELIEVE: “I am not good with money”: Look for evidence such as:

  • “I paid all my bills on time this month”
  • “I made coffee at home instead of buying it”
  • “I researched better rates for my insurance”
  • “I have maintained a savings account”

IF YOU BELIEVE: “I am not a good parent”: Seek evidence such as:

  • “My child shared their feelings with me today”
  • “I remained calm during their tantrum”
  • “I made time to play together”
  • “I modeled healthy boundary-setting”

IF YOU BELIEVE: “I cannot achieve my goals”: Notice evidence such as:

  • “I completed my morning routine today”
  • “I took one small step toward my bigger goal”
  • “I overcame an obstacle I faced”
  • “I learned from my previous attempt”

Remember: Your RAS will find whatever you program it to look for. Each time you consciously redirect your attention, you are literally rewiring your brain’s filtering system.

THE QUANTUM PERSPECTIVE: CREATING YOUR REALITY

From a quantum perspective, a deeper truth emerges. The observer effect in quantum physics suggests that the mere act of observation affects what is being observed. Your RAS is not just filtering your reality – it is participating in creating it through what it chooses to observe.

Consider this profound truth: If you do not actively bring conscious awareness to something, it is as if it did not exist in your personal reality. Two people can walk the exact same path and have entirely different experiences:

  • One person notices all the blooming flowers, the gentle breeze, and children laughing
  • Another sees only the litter, feels the humidity, and focuses on the traffic noise
  • Same walk, same external reality, yet two completely different experiences
  • Neither person is wrong – each has created their own valid reality through their RAS filter

What we perceive becomes our reality – not because it is the only reality available, but because it is the reality our RAS has selected for our conscious awareness.

This understanding revolutionizes how we view perception:

  • Your experience of reality is not passive – it is actively created by your RAS
  • What you do not notice might as well not exist in your personal reality
  • Your RAS is constantly creating your unique version of the world
  • By consciously directing your RAS, you literally participate in creating your experienced reality

PRACTICAL CHALLENGE FOR THE WEEK

WHY WAIT? LET’S GET STARTED

  • Choose your own “red car” – something positive you want to start noticing more often.

  • Spend the next seven days intentionally programming your RAS to notice this element in your environment.

  • Keep track of what you discover. You might be amazed at what has been there all along, waiting to be noticed.
